Using the Understand tools

What are the Understand tools?

Kami's Understand tools aim to make learning more accessible and engaging for all students, while also saving teachers valuable time in differentiating instruction and providing support.

All of the Understand tools can be accessed from the Understand menu on the Kami toolbar.

Types of Understand Tools

Build comprehension and vocabulary with instant definitions and audio support.

Support vocabulary development by pairing words with clear visual representations.

Instantly translate any selected text from your document into another language.

Break down complex content with AI-powered explanations.

Build understanding faster by turning complex content into clear, easy-to-read summaries. Learn more about the Summarize tool.

Adjust text complexity by Grade Level to better match student grade levels.

Adjust text complexity with a simple slider to better match learner needs.


Toggle Area Selection

With the exception of the Dictionary tool and Picture Dictionary tool, all of the Understand tools allow the option to change how you select content on the document. This is done by toggling on/off Area Selection.

With Area Selection turned on , you can click and drag a box over the content on your document to select it, then use your desired Understand tool.

If turned off , you can only select embedded text in your document.

πŸ“ If you are unable to select text in your document, you may need to run the Text Recognition tool. This will embed the text in your document, allowing it to be selected.


Advanced Features

Further options are available at the bottom-left of each Understand tool window while using.


You can have the tool's response read aloud, translate it into another language, or convert into into a text comment. You can also copy the response to your device's clipboard for pasting later.

Feature Control

Teachers can turn the Translate tool off using Feature Control anywhere it is available.
