An in-depth rundown of how to use the Kami Questions AI tool

Updated over a week ago

To access the new Convert and Generate options for the Questions AI tool, you’ll need to enable it by opting in for Kami AI. You can still select the Create from scratch option, as shown below.

How do I turn on Questions AI?

It’s quick and easy! Check out this article to find out how.

How to use Convert, Generate, and Create from scratch

Convert Questions

Once you select the Questions AI Tool, a new window with three different options will appear on the right of your screen.

If you have a learning resource with questions, you can select Convert AI.

Once selected, you’ll see a further two options:

  1. Convert the current document — This allows the AI to convert the document’s content into autograding questions.

  2. Convert other PDF — If you have a blank file loaded with no content to convert or you want to convert questions from a different file, you can select this.

Once you select the best option for your situation, choose which pages to convert to questions. Then, select the Convert questions button at the bottom.

While the AI is busy saving you hours of valuable time, it'll estimate how many seconds you'll need to wait for your autograding and editable questions to appear.

Once your questions are generated, you can edit them to suit your teaching style or students' needs.

Generate Questions

Generate questions functions similarly to Convert questions, except the AI will create autograding questions straight from the content on the page — perfect for creating assessments directly from curriculum content.

❗️ Questions AI works best with annotations saved to Google Drive or OneDrive. Your work is autosaved every 3 minutes, but manually save changes to Drive from the File menu to generate questions on recently added annotations. We’re working on making this process smoother!

Advanced settings for Generate Questions

You can set the depth of knowledge for the questions you're creating. Four total levels can be matched with the grade level chosen. There is also the option of Below the grade level or Above the grade level.

Below is a breakdown of each depth of knowledge level with a short description of each:

Level 1: Recall and Reproduction

  • Tasks at this level require basic recall of facts, definitions, or simple procedures. The focus is on rote memorization and straightforward application.

Level 2: Skills and Concepts

  • Tasks at this level involve more than one cognitive step. They require students to apply skills and concepts, often involving decision-making or reasoning.

Level 3: Strategic Thinking

  • Tasks at this level require reasoning, planning, and using evidence. They often involve abstract thinking and a higher level of complexity in the decision-making process.

Level 4: Extended Thinking

  • Tasks at this level involve complex reasoning, planning, developing, and thinking over an extended period. They often require synthesis of information from multiple sources and making connections across disciplines.

Create Questions

Type your question, add your answer keys, and you're good to go!

How to edit questions that are generated/created

All questions and answers are editable, meaning you can take AI's work and add a human touch to all assessment content.

The Settings Menu for each question is found at the bottom of the question, shown in the screenshot below.

  1. This dropdown box allows you to change the question type.

2. Toggle whether the question is visible on the document. If you drag a question onto your document, this setting will automatically turn on.

3. Toggle to place only answers on the document. This setting is particularly helpful if the document already has questions.

4. Toggle to randomize the question’s answer order.

5. Set the total score available to students.

Once your question is on the page

Questions AI gives you the choice between having the full question on the page or a marker with the question shown on the right-side Questions Panel for the student. Below are examples of each option and how to select it:

Navigation tips and other helpful settings once the questions are created

The three-dot menu allows you to view your questions more conveniently. It also allows you to delete them all and start over.

The + button allows you to add/create your own questions alongside the generated questions.

The Binoculars button lets you view the questions on the page as the student would see them.

Another navigation menu is at the bottom of all the generated/created questions. This is just the main menu, so you have a way to restart the process.
