How to use the Understand tool

This article runs you through the new Understand menu. Useful for second languages.

Updated over a week ago

Getting started

The Understand menu is now your go-to for tools like the Dictionary, Translate, Explain, and Relevel.

All the tools, with the exception of the Dictionary tool, have the option to change how you select content on the document. This can be done by toggling area selection.

If you turn the toggle on , you can click and drag a box over the content on which you want to use the tools. If the toggle is turned off , you can only select text.

❗️ This tool is in BETA, which means that it might still need improvement. Please provide us with any feedback you have on this feedback document.

Types of Understand Tools

Dictionary

The Dictionary tool is still available; it is the first option in the Understand menu. For information about how to use the Dictionary, please see this article.

Translate

To translate content on your document, select the text you want to see in a different language.

Once you've selected the text or area you want to translate, click the drop-down menu and select your preferred language.

🔍 If you are unable to select text, you might need to use the Text Recognition tool. Running Text Recognition will make the text selectable on your document.

Explain

The explain tool allows you to simplify a section of selected text. It helps students understand content by rewording it for them. This can also be used to explain images in the document.

Relevel

The Relevel tool allows you to rephrase text in a document into different grade levels.

Students will see a different iconfor the Relevel tool, named Adjust, which is a similar concept to Relevel, just with simpler options.

Advanced Features

Further options are available at the bottom left of the Translate, Explain, and Relevel prompt.

You can Read Aloud the selected text translation, and it will read the translated text in that language.

✏️ Some languages don't have read-aloud support at this point in time.

You can translate the content and put it into a text comment . This can be helpful for future reference for your student or you as a teacher.

You can also copy the content to the clipboard and paste it into a text box.

Feature Control

Teachers can turn the Translate tool off in the Feature Control settings anywhere it is available. For more information on the Feature Control feature, please see this article.
