Deploying your license via Google Workspace Org Units

How does Google Workspace Org Unit deployment work?

This process functions by syncing information between your Google Workspace and Kami. Your basic Google OU user information is shared with your Kami license, automatically adding all users from the selected OUs to the Kami license.

This is only a one-way sync. Therefore, adding or removing users from the Kami license will not be reflected on the Google OU side. If you add or remove users from the Google OU, this will be reflected in the Kami license after the next automatic sync.

How to set up your Google OU deployment

1. In the License dashboard, select Manage License on the desired license.

2. Open the Add Users tab at the top of the screen.

3. Once in the Add Users tab, scroll down to the Deploy License to Google Workspace Organization Unit section, and select the Deploy to Google Workspace Organization Unit button.

After selecting, you will be prompted to authorize your account.

4. After authorizing, you can select which Organization Units you want to deploy to. The user count will be displayed to the right of the selected units. 

You can also change the user segmentation to Teacher or Student by selecting the User Profile button (refer to this section for more information).

When finished, select the Save button in the top-right corner.

Things to keep in mind

• You will not be able to start a new Google OU sync if the license is currently deployed via the domain-wide deployment method.
• Suspended users in the OU won't sync, as the sync includes only active users.
• Any user removed from the Kami license but still in an OU will be re-added to the Kami license at the next automatic sync.

Setting and locking user roles for an OU

With Google OU deployments, license admins can set the Kami role for all users within an OU. You can also lock the role to prevent students from changing it in Kami.

1. After navigating to the OU mapping page in the License dashboard using the above steps (or via Manage Users > Change Deployment), locate the specific OU to be edited and select the User Profile button.

2. To set the role for all users within the selected OU, select either the Student or Teacher role.

Setting the Student role and leaving the Editable option unselected locks the role, preventing students from changing it through their profile settings in Kami. To see how the role locking looks from a student's side, refer to this guide.

If the Teacher role is set, teachers can still switch roles in Kami without issue, regardless of whether the Editable option is selected.
