Using Feature Control

Choose the Kami annotation tools that the recipient will have access to when sharing your Kami documents and assignments.

Updated today

Who can do this?

πŸ‘€ Feature Control is available for Students and Teachers when sharing files.

πŸ‘€ Requires a Kami paid plan.

In addition to configuring Feature Control when sharing a file from Kami, teachers can also set this when creating Kami Assignments directly in an LMS.

What is Feature Control?

Feature Control allows you to choose the tools and features that your collaborators can access when they open your shared Kami document.

Any changes made to your Feature Control settings are automatically updated for collaborators, so you can modify it before or after you share your document.

For teachers, Feature Control is also available when creating Kami assignments in your LMS. You can configure Feature Control for your whole class, or for individual students, to ensure consistency and a focused learning experience for every student.

  • Assignment Integrity: You can control access to advanced tools to ensure assignments are completed fairly.

  • Seamless Workflow: Set the tool permissions as part of your routine assignment creation process without ever leaving your LMS.

  • Accessibility Control: Manage which accessibility tools, like Read Aloud or the Dictionary tool, are available to the class for a specific assessment or activity.

How to use Feature Control when sharing a file

1. Once your file is ready to be shared, select the Share button in the top-right corner of your Kami navigation bar.

2. If you have not yet uploaded your file to a drive or Kami Cloud, you will be prompted to upload it at this stage. Choose from Google Drive, OneDrive, or Kami Cloud.

Each of these has different sharing options that allow for Feature Control. Learn more about each below:

Google Sharing

Under the Sharing Permission section, selecting either My Domain or Anyone with the link allows you to configure Feature Control for Editor or Create individual copy.

Select the Feature Control button to open the Feature Control menu and set the permissions.

OneDrive Sharing

Under the Sharing Link Permission section, selecting either Editor or Create individual copy allows you to configure Feature Control.

Select the Feature Control button to open the Feature Control menu and set the permissions.

Kami Cloud Sharing

Under the Link Sharing is On section, selecting either of the Anyone with link options allows you to configure Feature Control.

Select the Feature Control button to open the Feature Control menu and set the permissions.

3. In the Feature Control menu, simply click the check box next to any tool or feature listed to disable it.

πŸ“ All tools/features will be enabled by default. To quickly disable all of them, click the check box next to Tools to display and Additional features. Afterwards, you can select individual tools and features to enable.

To save your selected settings and apply them to future shared documents, select the Remember settings for this class option (on the bottom left side of the window).

4. Once you're finished making changes, select Confirm.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if my Whole Class and Individual Student settings differ?

The setting on the Individual Students will override the Whole Class setting for those specific students. This allows you to manage the majority of your class efficiently, while still differentiating for specific student needs.

Can I change the Feature Control settings after my Kami Assignment has been posted?

Yes. You can edit the Kami Assignment in your LMS via the Edit Assignment feature and update the Feature Control settings.

However, there is one exception for the Google Classroom LMS; while the Kami Assignments made through Google Classroom Extension integration fully support this, the Kami Assignments made through Google Classroom Add-on integration currently do not.

If I disable a tool, will it also be disabled for me, the teacher?

No. The Feature Control settings only affect students and only apply to that particular Kami Assignment for which you set the Feature Control. You will still be able to see and access all Kami tools for grading and providing feedback.

If you have a co-teacher who is acting as a student in a class, ensure that they have access to all tools by adding and configuring their Feature Control settings through the Individual Students tab.

Why is the Feature Control option missing when I create the Kami Assignment?

Ensure you are creating a Kami Assignment using the correct Kami integration method for your LMS. For more information about creating Kami Assignments, please refer to our Help Center guides.

Will students lose their work if I change their Feature Control settings while they are actively working?

No. The student's toolbar will simply update in real-time to reflect the new tool availability.
