The Non-integrated LMS workflow for using Kami πŸ†“

A general workflow for using Kami with a non-integrated LMS and the workarounds for compatibility.

Updated over a week ago

Kami integrates with Google Classroom, Schoology and Canvas. This integration helps to streamline assignment creation, distribution, and the turn-in process for both teachers and students. However, we understand that some schools use an alternative LMS (Learning Management System) that has yet to integrate with Kami, so we have outlined below the process on how you can use Kami with an alternative LMS that isn't integrated with Kami:

Below we demonstrate how to share out individual copies as assignments, as well as how to create collaborative documents where students all work on the same copy of a file.

Prep: Getting set up

The first thing is to make sure you have the Kami Chrome extension and app installed onto your own and your students' Chrome browsers.

To install this, you can go to the Chrome Web Store, or, if your school provides managed devices to the students, use the Google Admin panel: (more details available here: https://help.kamiapp.com/en/articles/788325-how-to-deploy-to-the-kami-app-and-extension-to-the-school-domain)

Learning the Kami workflow for non-integrated LMS

Teachers workflow:

This workflow covers how to push out individual copies of files to your students using a Google Drive Link.Β

  1. To Share through Google Drive, right-click the file and select Share as seen below:

[Sharing can be done directly with Google Drive or via Kami using sharing links.]

2. Enter the email addresses of the users you want to give access to your file.

3. Set the appropriate sharing permissions by clicking on the cogwheel highlighted below:

That will take you to the following screenshot here to set your settings for accessing the file:

3. When making the shareable link, you will want to select the tickbox "Viewers and commenters can see the option to download print and copy" option as the editing permission, and uncheck the "Viewers and commenters can see the option to download, print and copy." if you wish your students to have individual copies of the file (as shown below).

Once chosen, you can then insert the copy link into the assignment (I generally insert the hyperlink straight into the assignment description).

Student's workflow:Β

Once your students have received the link either in the assignment description or separately, they have all they need to be able to access and edit the file.

  1. Copy and paste this link the teacher has provided into their own browser. It will then show up in their Google Drive where they would need to then open the file into Kami.

  2. Students will be taken to this view below and can open the document via the "Open with" drop-down at the top of their screen. They can then select the "Annotate with Kami" option, which opens the file in Kami.

  3. Once students have opened up the link, they can now complete their assigned task using the Kami Basic tools.

  4. Once the assignment is completed, students can then use a new Kami Sharing link to return the completed assignment to the teacher. [This ensures all annotations are visible, and it allows the teacher to make annotations on the shared file for marking and corrections.]

  5. To submit work, students can also attach the annotated file copy to the assignment and submit that back through the chosen LMS's submission features. The teachers can then grade, use the Kami tools to add comments and feedback, then return the grade through the LMS.

Now whenever the person with newly added access annotates the document in Kami, all annotations are visible to the owner of the document.

Note: An email also gets sent to the person who was added in the permissions via Google Drive to access the document this way if they would prefer it:

Creating Kami group collaboration assignments:

If you would like to use Kami for group assignments, the workflow is even easier. You can create a Kami sharing link, via the share button in the Kami Menu Bar:

Once clicked on it takes you to the following Google Sharing window:

This link can be added to the assignment in the same place the Google Drive link was for individual assignments.

When the students click on the Kami link, they will open up the shared file, and all students will now be able to annotate on the same copy and see each others collaborative live as they are created on the document!
[You need to create either separate assignments or a separate link for each group of students when creating separate group assignments].

Teachers can also live give extra feedback to any progress made on the document, for keeping students on track. ✨
