Who can use this?
👤 The Summarize tool is available for Students.
👤 Requires a Kami paid plan.
One of several Understand tools available in Kami designed to improve comprehension, accessibility, and independence for all learners.
What is the Summarize tool?
The Summarize tool uses AI to condense selected text, sections of a document, or visual content into a clear, easy-to-read summary. It helps students quickly identify key ideas and essential information, without reading lengthy or complex content in full.
With the latest update, Summarize now includes expanded personalization options directly inside the modal, including:
-
Goal selection
-
Style control
-
Reading level adjustment
-
Language translation

How to use the Summarize tool
1. On the Kami toolbar, open the Understand tools menu and select Summarize.

2. Highlight text in your document, or toggle on Area Selection (located at the bottom of the Understand tools menu) to select larger sections.
The summary will appear automatically in the modal.

📝 If you cannot highlight text in your document, you may need to run the Text Recognition tool. This will embed the text in your document, allowing it to be selected.
Personalizing your summary
The updated Summarize modal includes a new expandable settings section.

Adjust level
Use the level slider to simplify or increase the complexity of the summary.
-
Slide toward Easy for simplified language.
-
Slide toward Hard for more advanced wording.
This allows students to match the explanation to their reading level or learning needs.
📝 The levels used in this tool are defined using AI to target the median range of standard reading scores for each grade. This ensures that the generated text matches the typical complexity of a student's reading level.

Language
Translate the generated summary into another supported language using the Language dropdown.

Other Summarize tool options
From the Summarize modal, you can also:
-
Read Aloud: Have the summary read aloud to you.
-
Create comment from response: Turn the summary into a comment on the document.
-
Copy response to clipboard: Copy the summary text to use elsewhere.
