Setting the primary teacher in Canvas
Make transferring work and delegating tasks between teachers easier.
Who is this for?
👤 Canvas Teachers assigned as course owner.
Looking to add a co-teacher to your course instead? Check out this guide.
What is a primary teacher?
A primary teacher is a Kami user responsible for owning all course assignment files, including all templates and student files.
When Kami detects that a teacher has changed roles, or a primary teacher has not yet been set for a course, we will ask you to set one the next time you open SpeedGrader.
After a primary teacher has been assigned, Kami will verify that they own these files. This allows teachers to have more control over where Kami places assignment files for your Canvas courses.
What is this used for?
Normally, when a teacher creates an assignment, they automatically assume ownership over all copies of that assignment. If a co-teacher then attempts to grade that assignment, they will not have access because they are not recognized as an owner of the file.
With the primary teacher feature, you can assign owners at the course level, giving you more control over who can grade assignments created under that course. This makes things like delegating tasks to co-teachers and handovers when a teacher retires or leaves your school easier.
How to change the primary teacher
In order to change the primary teacher of a course, you and the teacher you are planning to set as the Primary Teacher must both be assigned as owners of that course.
If this has been set, navigate to the Course, then scroll down and select Kami from the left sidebar.
In the Kami view that opens, a pop-up will appear where you can select Change Primary Teacher.

You'll then be prompted to select the primary teacher from the teachers currently assigned as course owners.
When you're finished, select Assign.
