Setting Gmail as the Email Handler for Chrome
Updated over 8 months ago

This article will guide you to setting up Gmail as the default email handler on your Google Chrome browser. The default email handler will open Gmail's compose new email page in a new Chrome tab whenever you do an action that requires sending an email, such as the Kami app’s Email Support and Send help recording buttons.

🔍 If you have been trying to use the Email Support or Send help recording buttons and they only open an empty Chrome tab, this article explains precisely how to fix this problem.

Accessing your Chrome settings

  1. In Chrome, click the vertical ellipsis button to reveal a menu and select Settings.

  2. Go to Privacy and security and select Site settings.

  3. Find Additional permissions, then go to Protocol handlers.

This will open the Protocol handlers configuration page. Proceed to the next section of this article.

Configuring your Protocol handlers

Set the Default behavior to Sites can ask to handle protocols setting.

Look at the space below it to see if an entry of mail.google.com exists as an email handler.

The next steps depend on what you can see that is already configured. See below for different scenarios and what to do for them.

  • If you can’t find mail.google.com, skip to Setting Gmail as the Default Email Handler section to continue.

  • If you can see mail.google.com with Default written under it, you are already set and don’t need to do anything else.

  • If you can see mail.google.com, but it doesn’t say Default, click the vertical ellipsis and select Set as default. You are now done and don’t need to do anything else.

  • If you can see mail.google.com, but it says Not allowed to handle protocols, hit the x button to remove it. Then go to Setting Gmail as the Default Email Handler for Chrome to continue.

Setting Gmail as the Default Email Handler

Open Gmail (mail.google.com) on another tab.

After the Gmail page finishes loading, it might trigger a pop-up like the one shown below. Click Allow.

Otherwise, if it doesn’t trigger a pop-up, locate and click on the double diamond button at the right side of the URL bar. This will open a small pop-up menu where you can select Allow and click Done afterward.

You are now set and don’t need to do anything else.
