Why Isn't the Turn-In Button Appearing?

Why the "Turn-in" button could be hidden for students, and how to make it appear.

Updated over a week ago

If you have a Kami LMS integration (connecting you to either Google Classroom, Schoology or Canvas) you will have access to the Turn In feature. This appears as a button in the top right hand corner of your students' Kami view. Clicking it will allow students to turn their Kami file straight back into the LMS it was assigned from.

However, there are a few things that can cause the Turn In button not show for your students. Here are a few of the ways to check that and how to fix it.

Please note that if you are opening the assignment file up as a teacher, you will be unable to see the turn in button.

Reason 1:

The Kami Chrome extension isn't installed onto everyones' device.

The integrations "Open with Kami" and "Turn in" functionality all require the extension to be correctly installed on both teacher and student devices.  Without it, your students cannot open the file directly to Kami, and the "turn-in" button will not be visible. If you have not yet installed the Kami extension, check out how to with our easy one-page guide here: Teacher one-pager guide

Reason 2:

Opening a file from outside your LMS

All of our LMS integrations have built in buttons that allow you to open any file directly into Kami. Doing so will also automatically create a copy of the file in your Google Drive, so that any changes/annotations that you make are saved. If the file is opened from Google Drive after it has been assigned out, the changes will be saved to the assignment file, but the turn in button will not appear.

We have a series of one-page instructions that are designed to help get students up and running with Kami that cover both the extension installation and how to use the LMS integration workflow:

Google Classroom
Schoology
Canvas

Reason 3:

Google Classroom Users: The Assignment Type has been set as "Shared File"  or "View Only"

During the assignment setup in Google Classroom, teachers are given three options for how the file is sent out.

The assigned file can be set to:

  • Make a copy for each student (only option where Turn In button shows)

  • Students share one copy (Turn In does not show)

  • Students cannot edit file (Turn In does not show)

The "Turn-In" button will only appear if the "Create a copy for each student" option has been selected. The other options send collaborative files, that are not linked to that account or accessible in the students Google Drive. Collaborative files cannot be turned in as an individual submission.

Reason 4:

Schoology Users: From Oct 2019 to May 2020. Students who signed up but skipped one of the Google authorization steps will result in ''Error turning in the file. Please try again." during Turn In

We noticed that during COVID-19 school shutdowns, there was an influx of new users who were loading Kami for the first time using our Schoology integration. If the student skips the second Google authentication dialog, and exits out of it by refreshing the page, or clicking the X in the dialog, Kami will error out on the Turn In process. The error will be "Error turning in the file. Please try again." We will be rolling out a fix early May 2020 to address this issue for all documents affected.

If, after taking/checking these steps, you are still finding that the "turn-in" button isn't appearing for your students, then feel free to contact us on the support@kamiapp.com for further troubleshooting.
