What is the Voice Typing tool?
Voice Typing (commonly referred to as Speech-to-Text) converts spoken words into written text in real time. It allows users to speak instead of typing in any text field across supported websites, digital assignments, forms, and learning tools.
Voice Typing is designed to support all learners, particularly those who may find traditional typing challenging or who express ideas more effectively through speech. Because it works across the web, students can use Voice Typing consistently without changing tools or workflows.
✔️ Kami Companion supports voice typing in more than 125 languages.
How to use the Voice Typing tool
1. Enable Voice Typing mode
Select the microphone icon in the Kami Companion toolbar to turn on Voice Typing.
2. Allow microphone access
If this is your first time using Voice Typing on a website, your browser may prompt you to allow microphone access. Select Allow while visiting the site to continue.
3. Start speaking
Once Voice Typing is enabled, place your cursor in any text box on the webpage and begin speaking.
When Voice Typing is active, a visual indicator will appear to show that the microphone is listening. Your spoken words will appear as typed text in real time.
Voice Typing quick options
Next to the microphone icon in the Companion toolbar is the language button. This button will display your current language selection.
Selecting the language button will open the Voice Typing settings menu.
From this menu, you can:
Select a voice typing language from your default or preferred list.
Toggle Voice Punctuation on or off (set to off by default).
Access additional language options and open the Voice Typing settings menu.
Note: The user experience for Voice Typing in Google Docs is slightly different. When enabled, a large microphone will appear on the screen.
The language options will not appear in the Companion navigation bar and will instead be found in the dropdown menu inside the large microphone. Voice Punctuation is automatically enabled by Google’s default settings.
What is Voice Punctuation?
Voice Punctuation controls whether punctuation is automatically added as you speak.
When Voice Punctuation is turned on, Kami Companion will automatically insert punctuation such as periods, commas, and question marks based on your speech.
When Voice Punctuation is turned off, spoken text will appear without punctuation. This can be helpful for drafting, brainstorming, or for students who prefer to edit punctuation separately after writing.
Voice Typing settings modal
To open the settings menu, select More languages and the settings modal will appear.
From this modal, you can:
Select a voice typing language from your default or preferred list.
Toggle your voice typing pal on or off, or change the selected pal to appear near your cursor and move as you speak.
