What is the Explain tool?
Explain is an AI-powered Companion Understand tool that helps users make sense of complex text, images, charts, graphs, or diagrams on a webpage.
When content is selected, Explain generates a clear and detailed explanation of what is on the screen. It rephrases ideas in accessible language and adds helpful context, much like a teacher might explain a challenging concept step by step.
Explain works with both text and visual content and is especially useful when students encounter unfamiliar topics, dense academic language, or information presented visually.
How to use the Explain tool
1. Select content to explain
Use Default Selection or Area Selection mode to select text, images, diagrams, graphs, or other content on the page. Click on the Explain feature to open the Understand tools modal.
2. View and listen to the explanation
The explanation will appear automatically in modal. Select the Read Aloud feature to hear the explanation.
3. Use the quick toggle for more options
Save time with the Quick Toggle feature, which allows you to switch between Understand tools without re-selecting content on the page.
Other Explain options
From this modal, you can:
Adjust the playback speed (between 0.1x and 2.0x).
Change the language of the explanation.
Copy the explanation to use across the web.
