What is the Explain tool?
Explain is an AI-powered Understand tool that helps users make sense of complex text, images, charts, graphs, or diagrams on a webpage.
When content is selected, Explain generates a clear and detailed explanation of what is on the screen. It rephrases ideas in accessible language and adds helpful context, much like a teacher might explain a challenging concept step by step.
Explain works with both text and visual content and is especially useful when students encounter unfamiliar topics, dense academic language, or information presented visually.
🦺 The Explain tool has safeguards in place so that if any inappropriate content is selected, an explanation will not be provided. Instead, it returns the following response: "The selected content contains inappropriate language that cannot be explained in an educational context."
How to use the Explain tool
1. Select content to Explain
Use Default Selection or Area Selection mode to select text, images, diagrams, graphs, or other content on the page. Click Explain to open the Understand tools modal.
2. View and listen to the explanation
The explanation will appear automatically in the modal. Select the Read aloud feature to hear the explanation.
3. Use the Quick Toggle for more options
Save time with the Quick Toggle feature, which lets you switch between Understand tools without reselecting content on the page.

From this modal, you can:

Adjust the playback speed (between 0.1x and 2.0x).
